It is an area of contrasting landscapes in which the predominant feature is Karstic rock, as its name suggests kar being the Indo-European word for rock.

At first glance the landscape appears to be a typical limestone area, with the chalky stone outcropping on the land, but an attentive observer will discover other fascinating and hidden features that never fail to surprise.

With its rich variety of tree species, the Karst is a target for nature lovers.
The fauna and the flora are part of a unique environment, in which the vagaries of climate have allowed numerous animal and vegetal species to find an ecosystem that provides for their needs.

This land has a surprising wealth of fascinating and unforgettable features!

This remarkable phenomenon, found all over the world, takes its name from this area, where this form of chemical denudation of rock was first studied. The surfaces on which we walk today lose 3 hundredths of a millimetre of thickness each year – 300 metres every million years!

Water infiltrates cracks and fractures and erodes the rock, eventually forming caverns that can deepen by hundreds of metres over millions of years. As a result, river water often plunges to immense depths. The accompanying erosion of surface rock can lead to disappearance of the roofs of caverns, leaving behind long irregularly-shaped depressions, different in form to dolines.
